Creative writing sparks confidence in English classes

Bangkok, Thailand :: A creative writing workshop at Sajapati School transformed an English class into a lively space for storytelling, cultural exchange and confidence-building.

Creative writing sparks confidence in English classes

At Sajapati school near Bangkok, Thailand, an English class recently turned into a creative writing workshop that gave students more than language skills — it gave them confidence.

Partnering through creativity

Crewmembers from Doulos Hope had planned to assist the class with conversational English. However, when the teacher announced, “We’re doing creative writing,” the session took a new direction. Gian (Ireland), one of the team members, smiled and said, “We’d love to learn together. Let’s see what we can create…. Creative writing means using your imagination,” Gian explained. “There are no wrong answers here.”

Ideas soar

Starting with the question, “What is creative writing?” Gian invited students to share ideas. “Writing with feelings!” one student shouted. “Making stories!” another added.

“Exactly,” Gian said warmly. “Let’s start with a character. Any ideas?”

Every suggestion went on the whiteboard. Soon, a narrative emerged — Bob, the fisherman, falls from the sky, hooks a shark and watches it sprout wings and fly away.

While creativity flowed, Gian gently corrected grammar: “Instead of ‘he fall,’ we say ‘he falls.’” He added, “We’re learning from each other — that’s the best part.”

Some students struggled with language barriers, but the group encouraged one another. One student even added illustrations, bringing the story to life.

Cultural exchange and confidence

Beyond language, the workshop offered cultural exchange. Crew represented continents from South America, Europe and Asia, giving students a glimpse of the world.

Gian reflected, When we share knowledge through language and cultural exchange, we open doors to new perspectives. That exchange doesn’t just teach — it transforms, helping people grow and discover possibilities beyond their own world.”

A local partner, Dear Dear, who helped facilitate the session shared her thoughts: “The children really enjoyed the experience. The team knew how to engage and entertain students of different ages, making the class lively and enjoyable,” she said. “Their approach helped students feel confident and excited about learning.”

The session ended with laughter and a sense of achievement. For these students, language classes became a bridge to confidence and global connection.
