Doulos Hope: Serving ports beyond reach

Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia :: As the new Managing Director, Nidhin Sebastian (India) highlights how Doulos Hope’s agility enables her to reach smaller harbours, foster grassroots connections and empower a diverse crew to bring long-term impact through service and partnership.

When Doulos Hope enters a small harbour, she is often the first ship of her kind to visit. With her size and flexibility, she can work in places that pose logistical challenges for larger ships. Nidhin, who serves on board with his wife and daughter, brings both professional experience and a family perspective to his new role. “This flexibility opens doors for communities that might never otherwise encounter opportunities for knowledge, help and hope,” he explains.

Within the wider vision of GBA Ships, Doulos Hope plays a unique role. “As a smaller and more agile vessel, she allows us to reach ports often inaccessible to larger ships... Our volunteer crew can connect deeply with local partners and individuals, creating long-term impact through presence and collaboration,” Nidhin shares.

Leading through change

Adapting to constant rotation, shifting contexts and evolving plans is part of ship life. “Adaptability, trust and resilience are non-negotiables,” Nidhin reflects. “I’ve learned to lead by anchoring in values rather than methods, building trust through transparency and consistency, and empowering others.”

One memory illustrates this. “During my time in Monrovia, Liberia, we tested more than 400 people for reading glasses,” he recalls. “As we packed up, a woman arrived with her daughter. Though the event had officially ended, I asked the team to reopen our kit. When she put on the glasses and realised she could read again, her joy was radiant—almost overwhelming. That moment encouraged not only her but our entire team.”

Looking ahead

“I believe Doulos Hope will continue to serve as both a symbol and a platform where emerging leaders can learn, grow and serve. Our ship is a place where purpose meets service, where young people step into a larger story. Through partnerships with organisations and governments, we will respond to real needs with tangible love and raise a generation to carry this vision far beyond our decks.”

From small harbours to major cities, Doulos Hope continues to show that an agile vessel with a dedicated crew working in partnership with local organisations and communities can make a lasting impact in the places she serves.
