Ships :: After almost 20 years since previous ship, Doulos visited, Doulos Hope is now in the Pacific!
From Timor-Leste in early 2026, Doulos Hope embarked on a ten-day journey towards the Pacific region for the first time, making Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea her first port of call there.
The vessel’s service in the Pacific Islands begins after having served communities across Asia for almost three years.
“We were so excited before the ship came,” said Miri, constable officer for Fiji Ports. “I was really looking forward to coming and having a visit inside this ship.”
“The Pacific Islands have rich cultures and people, and we are excited to have the opportunity to work alongside organisations in the region, learning from one another, sharing our lives, our love of literature, and seeing what can happen when we collaborate together in community.” Said Trizenia September (South Africa) Managing Director of Doulos Hope.
Evie, a resident in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, shared, “A lot of Papua New Guineans remember Doulos, and they have really happy memories of that visit and they were waiting for the ship to come back.”
So far Doulos Hope has had the amazing opportunity to serve local communities in the ports of Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, and Lautoka and Suva in Fiji.
In Papua New Guinea, multiple teams of crew visited local villages to conduct eyesight tests and distribute glasses. One team had a memorable encounter with Kya, a lady in the village of Porebada. She had received glasses from a team from Doulos, and now eighteen years later, received a new pair from the Doulos Hope crew.
Across the Pacific Islands, sports is an important part of the culture. Doulos Hope’s crew has been able to share in this passion, creating ways to connect and build new friendships. “It was amazing — I enjoyed my time especially with the different people from different cultures,” said club leader Jonathan, after a friendly volleyball match with crewmembers in Lautoka, Fiji. Another club member added, “Keep doing what you are doing. You are doing something good.”
And of course, Doulos Hope’s floating bookfair has encouraged many to step on board the vessel, with the crew having the privilege of welcoming over 70,000 visitors on board so far during her time in the region.
Thank you for your ongoing support of Doulos Hope as she continues her journey in the Pacific, sharing knowledge, help and hope!
